The beginning of the 1980s was kicked off on the charts by a ballad – Please Don’t Go by KC and The Sunshine Band.
The song was from the sixth studio album from the band, Do You Wanna Go Party, which was released in June 1979 by TK, described as a combination of funk and disco songs.
Written and produced by by lead singer Harry Wayne Casey aka KC and band member Richard Finch, the song is a plea to a girlfriend to not leave.
Released in July 1979, the song was the second single from the album and had a slow rise on the Billboard Hot 100, making the top spot in the first week of January 1980.
The first number one single of the 1980s, Please Don’t Go held the spot for one week – and the rumour was that when it left the top spot, Harry Wayne Casey decided to pursue a solo career, after many disagreements with his songwriting partner Finch.
The song did reasonably well on European music charts, but was always a favourite of American radio.
