A sappy love song of the 1980s became a Billboard hit thanks to a television show: At This Moment by Billy Vera & The Beaters.
Written by Billy Vera, At This Moment was recorded and performed during a series of live shows by the band at The Roxy in West Hollywood, California.
The final compilation was the self-titled live album released on Alfa Records in 1981.
The band had a previous top 40 hit with I Can Take Care of Myself, but the new single didn’t get past #79 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 1985, the song was chosen by NBC sitcom Family Ties as the love song for characters Michael P. Keaton and girlfriend Ellen Reed (played by actors Michael J. Fox and Tracey Pollan).
Thanks to the popularity from the television show, Rhino Records bought the rights to re-release the song, giving it a second life on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986.
By late January 1987, the song hit number on the Billboatd Hot 100, thanks to radio airplay across America and fueled by the television relationship on Family Ties.
The song went on to chart on the Billboard Adult Contemporary, Country and R&B lists and was certified Gold single.
And the song even had a romantic aftermath – as Fox and Pollan married and the song was played for them anytime they made a public appearance.
