memories of the ’70s – I Wanna Be Your Lover by Prince

The end of the 1970s was the beginning of a music career for Prince Nelson Rogers, with his first hit single I Wanna Be Your Lover.

Working on the follow-up to his debut album, Prince released his second album For You, which didn’t attract attention of critics or fans.

Heading back into the studio, Prince recorded the very funky I Wanna Be Your Lover.

Written by Prince, the song was about his crush on a female singer, and how she viewed him as a child.

Released on August 24, 1979, the song slowly climbed the charts, and earned him promotion spots on American Bandstand and The Midnight Special, as the song got plenty of airplay on radio stations.

The song hit number one on the Billboard R&B charts, number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and number two on the Billboard Hot Dance Club songs, and was the first hit single for Prince.

There are two music videos for this song, one which shows Prince singing alone in a black room, while the second rare video shows Prince and his band in a colourful environment and is very sexually suggestive.

Other performers would cover this song, including M-Doc, Patrick Stump, Millie Jackson, Haywoode, 50 Cent, Kimbra and Corinne Bailey Rae.
