memories of the ’80s – MTV

For all those video-obsessed teenagers in 1984, MTV took its Friday video countdown and launched a special to celebrate the end of 1984 on new year’s eve: The Year End MTV Top 20 Video Countdown.

Every Friday night, MTV would air its top videos of the week, on December 31, 1984, they took the same format and launched a new year’s eve tradition, with the first year hosted by original MTV VJ Mark Goodman.

Like the weekly countdown, the videos were introduced with pop culture tidbits and information about how the video had done during the year, building up the anticipation as each video was named to the charts.

Starting with number 20 – Manfred Mann’s Earth Band with the video for the song “Runner”. Other highlights of the list include Prince with Let’s Go Crazy, The Cars You Might Think, Ratt Round and Round and Night Ranger with Sister Christian.

Two movies had a major impact on the list: Phil Collins with the title track from Against All Odds and Kenny Loggins with the title track from Footloose. And the number one video according to MTV for 1984: John Waite’s ballad Missing You, edging the fun and freewheelin’ tune of Jump! by Van Halen.
