memories of the ’70s – The Boys are Back in Town by Thin Lizzy

For this Irish band, success hit after a worldwide hit with a song the band didn’t love – Whiskey in a Jar – but soon their name became synonymous with their next hit “The Boys are Back in Town.”

Embarking on their first tour of the US in 1975, Thin Lizzy went on the road with Bachman Turner Overdrive (BTO) and Bob Seger, Later in the year, BTO toured Europe, bringing Thin Lizzy with them, giving them more exposure.

In 1976 the band recorded their sixth studio album – Jailbreak – with the lead single “The Boys are Back in Town.” Reaching number 8 on the UK charts and number 12 on the US Billboard charts, the album and single put Thin Lizzy into the pop culture spotlight.

Written by lead singer Phil Lynott, the song was his view of being on the road and returning home. Listen to the original version here.

With the strength of this lead single, and the follow up single “Jailbreak”, the band went on tour with hot bands of the time, including REO Speedwagon, Rush and Aerosmith.

In various incarnations, Thin Lizzy continued on into the next decade, but the song remains a classic rock standard from the 1970s.
