The official Opposition Leader in Canada and leader of the New Democratic Party, Jack Layton, died on Monday. He was a former city councillor in Toronto and had been a well-known figure in Canadian politics for the past 30 years. For Canadians, its rare for a politician to die in office. Jack Layton died of cancer.
I first met him as a journalism student, and he was the first politician I interviewed. It was well-known amongst students that he would always make time for us, despite his busy schedule.
I felt incredibly sad when I heard about his death – and when I saw these words written on the walls of Toronto’s city hall, part of a memorial to Jack Layton, I thought they were inspiring to show:
